Viriditas, as used by Hildegard von Bingen, refers to the greening-green, life-giving force that animates all creation.

‘Gestures towards Viriditas’ threads together a material-driven investigation into a more meditative painting practice through the use of lichen along with a close reading of Hildegard von Bingen in light on contemporary philosophy, scientific and personal spiritual concerns. Lichen as a symbiotic plant/fungus, its slow growth rate, the very fact that it is always ‘being-with’ a support, were inspirations. I speak of meditation in the sense of repeating a mantra, but perhaps the models of benedictine orderlies like Hildegard von Bingen are more appropriate in that a ritualistic working and reworking of prayers, songs and indeed plots of land were part of their daily service. Thus the project began, slowly working the same canvas with lichen over and over, before expanding to works that demonstrated the layering process within the works themselves (the ‘Being-with’ series) and later more free form painting based on my readings (for example, ‘The Seven Stars’, ‘Tres’ y ‘No hay que buscarlo’)..

The accompanying book, ‘Gestures towards Viriditas,’ is a collection of related readings on Viriditas and greening, along with journal entries and meditations on the subject and the painting process.

Viriditas, tal como la utiliza Hildegarda de Bingen, se refiere a la fuerza vivificante y reverdeciente que anima toda la creación (el verdor que reverdece): una vitalidad divina presente en la naturaleza, el cuerpo y el alma. 

‘Gestos hacia la Viriditas’ entrelaza una investigación impulsada por los materiales hacia una práctica artística más meditativa mediante el uso del líquen, con una lectura cercana de Hildegard von Bingen a la luz de la filosofía contemporánea, la ciencia y las preocupaciones espirituales y personales. El líquen, como organismo simbiótico entre planta y hongo, su crecimiento lento y el hecho de que siempre ‘vive con’ un soporte fueron las principales inspiraciones. Hablo de meditación en el sentido de repetir un mantra, aunque quizá los modelos de las órdenes benedictinas como Hildegard von Bingen sean más apropiados: su trabajo diario incluía repetir y reescribir oraciones, cantos y también cultivar y trabajar un terreno. Así comenzó el proyecto: trabajando lentamente el mismo lienzo con líquen una y otra vez, antes de pasar a obras que mostraban el proceso de capas dentro de la pintura (la serie ‘Being-with’), y más tarde a trabajos más libres inspirados en mis lecturas (por ejemplo, las obras ‘The Seven Stars’, ‘Tres’ y ‘No hay que buscarlo’).

El libro que acompaña la obra, ‘Gestos hacia la Viriditas’, es una recopilación de lecturas relacionadas con la Viriditas y ‘el verdor de verdea’, junto con entradas de diario y meditaciones sobre el tema y el proceso artístico.
