This closing line turns my mind around, a little. Something weird and strange is going on, and this feeling forms the start of this small series of works, along with the Ortega y Gasset essay in which I first encountered López-Picó’s verse, thanks to poet Joan Fleming.

Both López-Picó’s poem and Ortega y Gasset’s essay resonated at an intimate frequency, recalling works I’ve read, ideas that have motivated recent exhibitions, and a certain feeling I get from working with my materials.

‘D’un xiprer’

Este último verso me genera un vuelco en el pensamiento. Algo raro y extraño está sucediendo, y esta sensación estimula el comienzo de esta pequeña serie de obras, junto con el ensayo de Ortega y Gasset en el que me encontré por primera vez con el verso de López-Picó, gracias a la poeta Joan Fleming.

Resoné en una frecuencia íntima tanto con el poema de López-Picó como con el ensayo de Ortega y Gasset. Me recordaron obras que he leído, ideas que han motivado algunas de mis exposiciones recientes y cierta sensación que me produce trabajar con mis materiales.

Working alongside @rafael_trapiello for @arniches2

Working alongside @rafael_trapiello for @arniches26 on a new series of concrete postcards to take to @swabartfair 2022.

Wax, chalk, lichen, soil, moss, sand and various other floralities for colouring.

A few small discoveries: rubbing with damp lichen brings out a vivid violet and torching a mixture of lichen and wax will bring out a fluorescence (before burning, obviously).

Experiments with concrete //

As I work my way through Anselm Jappe’s excellent work on the intertwined history of (reinforced) concrete and capitalism, ‘Béton’, it becomes clear that the paving over of the ‘natural’ world, of our relation to the non-human, is a problem that should at least be acknowledged in the use of concrete, without having to abandon what most certainly a joyously flexible and beautiful material.

So I’ve been playing around with alternative ‘structures’ to reinforce the works, using culled brush alongside materials removed from renovated buildings here in Madrid. The thick twine in picture three, for instance, still holds many of the walls up here in Madrid today.

The snippet of lichen-covered bark in image four is from here in Madrid, carrying a properly lush yellow. There are works using lichen from my home town, too, riddled with a near luminescent green, but I can’t give all the good stuff all at once now can I?

An @arniches26 production, beautiful as ever.

You’ll find a recent series of painted postcards, and both a new large scale work and a fresh concrete postcard both Galicia inflected.

It’s been two years since I saw my native greens of Yorkshire, but Galicia recalls it heavily. Visiting is, therefore, to feel oddly (un)homely.

Looking forward to seeing those hills again this weekend.

You’ll find a new larger piece (image 2) which takes its title - ‘fold, fallow, and plough’ - from the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem ‘Pied Beauty’ along with an 2019 work (image 3) based on ‘The Living Mountain’ by Nan Shepherd, a book I come back to over and over again. Here Shepherd traces her many years living alongside the Cairngorm mountains, Scotland.

It is a meditation on space and being, a slow revelation, and I mention all this as my ‘The Living Mountain’ series was definitely the start of an interest in heavily worked, smaller scale pieces, of which I’ve now produced a few.

I’d made them to be sent out by post, feeling as I did quite separated from anything resembling a ‘community’, and not only to arrive at their destinations dishevelled but to continue to disintegrating over time. In these early experiments this was achieved in the main by applying thick layers of emulsion that, when dry, would brittle and flake.

Recipients, get out your DustBuster.

My ‘The Living Mountain’ piece showing at @arniches26 (image 3) is the last of that early series, the only one not sent out into the world.

I’d seen Astrid dance with @korsia_official and knew it made sense to invite her into @arniches26, given that my painting is such a bodily thing, that it feels like dancing in a frame, sometimes.

If you didn’t catch her today, I really recommend you try to get down next week.
